University of Tennessee to Offer Blockchain Course
The University of Tennessee is set to offer a blockchain course in the fall semester. The course, which is being offered jointly by the university’s Department of Computer Science and Information Systems and the Department of Economics, will be the first of its kind in the United States.
The course will focus on the “application of blockchain technology across a variety of industries, including healthcare, finance, supply chain, and digital rights management,” according to a press release.
“We are excited to offer this cutting-edge course that will give our students a comprehensive understanding of how blockchain technology works and the potential applications it has in today’s world,” said Department of Computer Science and Information Systems Chair Dr. Srinivasan Ramaswamy.
The university notes that the course will not just cover blockchain technology but also its underlying principles, such as cryptography and distributed consensus.
The course will be offered in the fall semester and is open to students who are interested in pursuing a degree in computer science or information systems.
University of Tennessee Students to Receive Crypto Stipend
The University of Tennessee has announced that students will be receiving a crypto stipend in the form of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. The stipend will be provided in an effort to further cryptocurrency education on campus.
“We are excited to be working with the University of Tennessee to provide a cryptocurrency stipend for students. Cryptocurrencies are a new and rapidly evolving technology, and our hope is that this program will help students learn more about them and invest in their long-term viability,” said Sean Neville, CEO of Blockstream.
A total of $5,000 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin will be distributed to students during the first year of the program. The program will be extended for another year if it proves to be successful.
University of Tennessee Endowment Invests in Bitcoin
and Blockchain Technology
In November 2017, the University of Tennessee Endowment announced it had invested in bitcoin and blockchain technology. The investment was made through a subsidiary company, Cumberland Bitcoin LLC, which will focus on the development of bitcoin and blockchain technology-based applications.
The University of Tennessee Endowment is one of the largest endowments in the United States, with assets of over $24 billion. This investment marks the first time a university endowment has invested in bitcoin and blockchain technology.
University of Tennessee Alumni Launches Crypto Exchange
The University of Tennessee Alumni Association has announced the launch of a new cryptocurrency exchange. The exchange, called UTXA, will allow alumni to buy and sell cryptocurrencies directly with one another.
The exchange is open to users in the United States, and will offer a variety of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, ethereum, and bitcoin cash. UTXA will also offer margin trading and other features that are available on more established exchanges.
UTXA is the latest in a series of initiatives by the University of Tennessee Alumni Association to support its alumni. Earlier this year, the association announced the launch of a scholarship program for students who are interested in studying cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies.
University of Tennessee to Host Bitcoin Conference
The University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) will host a bitcoin conference in early December.
The event, called "Bitcoin: Beyond the Block Chain," will be held on Dec. 1 from 6-8 p.m. in the UTK Student Union Ballroom.
Speakers at the event include UTK law professor Nathaniel Popper, who is the author of "Digital Gold: Bitcoin and the Inside Story of the Misfits and Millionaires Trying to Reinvent Money," and UTK computer science professor Jeremy Clark, who is the co-founder of blockchain startup Chain.
"Bitcoin is a new technology that is still evolving," says UTK President Joe DiPietro in a statement. "This conference is an opportunity for our students to learn more about this exciting innovation and to explore its potential applications."
